O.Henry's Porter (English Porter)

O.Henry's Porter was awarded the Silver Medal for Robust Porter at the 1996 Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver.

A thick, rich, satisfying porter style beer, O. Henry's Porter was inspired by a man known, once or twice, to lay it on pretty thick himself. Pale, Caramel and Chocolate malts are combined with just enough hops to round out the flavor. The result: A richly hewn, chewy texture with a hint of sweetness. And a beer for the most discriminating dark beer lover. Which, among other things - including a ranch hand, a singer, a wooer of women, an alleged embezzler, a pharmicist, a fugitive, a banana boat rider, a draftsman and a world-renowned short story writer - O. Henry just might have been. As our Brew Master says about O. Henry's Porter, "Yum." We think O. Henry would have said the same thing. More or less.

Beer Profile:

Created in 1772 by Ralph Harwood of the Bell Brewhouse in Shoreditch near London in response to sutomer demand for a mix of ales consisting of strong ale, common beer and small beer. Porter fell out of favor for many years but has recently seen a revival. GABF list the following as a profile: "Porters range in flavor from bitter to sweet and are dark brown in color. The darkness in color comes from the use of black malt rather than the roasted barley featured in stouts. This medium-bodied beer attains a light mouthfeel and a quick finish through bitter hopping." Another source states: " (That Porter) is made with a highly roasted malt. It has a less pronounced hop flavor than other ales, and a slightly sweeter taste." And yet another source says: ".... and when brewed to a higher alcohol and hop level, the ale was called a stout." As you can see there are many different opinions on this profile as there are recipes for Porter. This could be one of the most interesting beers to discuss and taste, and taste and discus.....

Brewers Comments:
As a predecessor to stouts, porter ales are tradionally dark, full flavored beers with a caramel and chocolate-like character. O.Henry's Porter is no exception. This is a very dark, malty and robust ale with overtones of chocolate and roasted flavors. Perle and Cascade hops are added to balance the heavy malted character as well as give it a pleasant hoppy aroma. This porter is brewed with 85% two-row pale malt, 10% caramel 60L malt and 5% chocalte malt. English ale yeast is used for fermentation.
